Types of Drilling Rod

The drilling rods produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Tapered Drill Rods
Tapered drill rods are a type of connected drilling tool commonly used in rock drilling operations, typically used with a rock drill and a tapered drill bit.

Top Hammer Drill Rods
The MF rod, or speed drill rod, is designed for efficient and secure drilling operations. It features a male thread at one end and a female thread at the other, allowing for direct connection to the shank adapter without requiring a coupling sleeve.

Threaded Drill Rod
Threaded connections can be repeatedly disassembled and assembled, and have the characteristics of firm connection, reliable force transmission, and good sealing.

Functions of Drilling Rod

Power transmission
The drill rod transmits power (such as torque and thrust) from the drilling rig to the drill bit, driving the bit to perform the drilling operation.

Circulation of drilling fluid
The interior of the drill rod has a pipeline that can transport the drilling fluid (mud) from the pump equipment to the drill bit, serving the purpose of flushing, cooling, and carrying the rock cuttings.

Guidance and support

As a column-like structure, the drill rod can provide guidance and support to the drill bit, ensuring that the bit drills in the predetermined direction.

Measurement signal transmission

Some drill rods are equipped with internal lines that can transmit various measurement signals (such as geological information, borehole inclination, etc.) from the drill bit to the surface, providing data for well logging.

Borehole stabilization

When encountering soft or collapsible formations, the drill rod can help maintain the stability of the borehole wall and prevent it from caving in.

Applications of Drilling Rod

Mining and Quarrying
In mining, drill rods are used for both surface and underground operations to create blast holes for ore extraction. These rods, often in the form of extension rods, enable drilling to great depths in hard rock formations.

Tunneling and Underground Excavation
For tunneling projects, drill rods are used to create the necessary boreholes for rock excavation and reinforcement. The drill rods facilitate the drilling of blast holes for the initial tunnel excavation.

Foundation and Pile Drilling
Drill rods are a key component in civil engineering and construction for foundation work. They are used to drill deep holes to create foundations for large structures like bridges, high-rise buildings, and dams.

Bench Drilling and Surface Blasting
Drill rods are fundamental to the process of bench drilling in surface mining and construction. This technique is used to create a series of uniformly spaced holes in a rock face, or “bench,” for controlled blasting.

Geotechnical and Exploration Drilling
In geotechnical and exploration drilling, drill rods are used to obtain core samples from deep underground for geological analysis. The rods connect the drill bit to the surface, allowing for the extraction of intact rock cores.

Horizontal Directional Drilling
In trenchless construction, drill rods are the conduits for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). They are used to create a pilot bore from a surface entry point to an exit point, often passing beneath rivers, roads, or existing infrastructure.

Drilling Rod Installation Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Drill Rods
Before installation, a thorough inspection of both the male and female threaded ends is essential. Check for any signs of wear, deformation, or cracks that could compromise the connection’s strength and integrity, ensuring the rods are in good condition.

Step 2: Align the Drill Rods
The first action is to hold the drill rod steady while bringing the next rod into position. This is the moment to ensure the two components are perfectly parallel. Proper support prevents the weight of the rods from causing misalignment during the initial engagement.

Step 3: Hand-Tighten the Connection
Once the threads have started to engage, continue to turn the rod by hand. The goal is to fully engage as many threads as possible without the use of tools. A properly aligned connection will turn smoothly and easily.

Step 4: Use a Breakout Wrench
With the rods hand-tight, select a breakout wrench or pipe wrench of the appropriate size for the drill rod diameter. Position the wrench on the wrench flats of each rod to get a good, secure grip that won’t slip.

Step 5: Verify the Connection
After using the wrench, perform a final visual inspection of the joint. Look for a flush, consistent connection with no visible gaps between the shoulders of the male and female ends. Any gap indicates the connection isn’t fully seated.
