How does it work?


The basic concept of core drilling is to extract a sample from a particular surface using a hollow drill bit. There are two types of core drilling, and each process works slightly differently.
Soft coring is used for loose materials. This process is effective up to a depth of 500 feet. However, soft coring equipment can reach greater depths as long as the right conditions are met. This process uses nested barrels. The inner barrel is used to push out and capture the sample, while the outer barrel acts as a protection to prevent the hole from collapsing. This also ensures that there is no contamination from air or liquid when extracting the sample.
Hardcore coring is used to extract a qualified rock sample. While this process also uses a nested barrel, it is the outer barrel that extends out in this process. The outer barrel is flushed to the surface with drilling fluid or air before drilling the hole. This way, the sample is not disturbed. This process can reach a depth of 5,000 feet and is also known as diamond coring because a diamond-coated drill bit is required to penetrate the rock. This method is widely used for samples that are harder than sandstone.
